Amul Dairy, established in 1946 by Gujarat farmers inspired by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, revolutionized India's dairy industry by forming a cooperative to eliminate middlemen. Initially starting with just 247 liters of milk daily, Amul now handles 5 million liters per day, with 7,64,954 milk producers from 1821 societies. Its success led to the foundation of the National Dairy Development Board by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965, under Dr. Verghese Kurien's leadership, replicating Amul's model nationwide.

Amul Dairy was established in 1946 by local farmers of Gujrat in India. The great Indian leader and freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel advised the local farmers of Gujrat to get rid of the local trade cartel and form their own co-operative, to help them to control everything from procurement, processing to marketing of products and the aim was to eliminate the unfair manipulation of the middle man in the trade.

In 1946, under the inspiration of the Sardar Patel, Morarji Desai, and Tribhuvandas Patel the local farmers of Gujrat formed their cooperative and named it Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd. In the beginning, the company started the co-operative with the support of two village farmers who had 247 liters of milk per day. Today, Amul Dairy is well known around the world for the quality of its products. Currently, the dairy has 7,64,954 milk producers from 1821 co-operative societies and has milk collection handling capacity of 5 million liters per day however, it collects 3.3 million liters of milk every day.

In 1964 late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then Prime Minister of India visited Anand to inaugurate Amul’s cattle feed plant. He got so inspired seeing the success of Amul that he wished the same approach should be the basis of dairy development in other parts of the country. He understood that the success of dairy happened due to four main factors in running the dairy. The main factors were the dairy owned by farmers, elected representatives mange village and district union, highly skilled professionals to manage dairy, and most importantly taking care of the needs of farmers.

Under the leadership of the then prime minister of India - the late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was set up in 1965 and Dr. Verghese Kurien was appointed as the head of the institution he replicated the success of Kaira Cooperative Milk Producers Union (Amul Dairy) to the other states of India.
