Horlicks, founded in 1873 by brothers James and William Horlick, is a renowned nutritional supplement made from barley malt, wheat, and milk. Initially popularized during World War II, Horlicks remains a staple in India, the UK, and Southeast Asia. Acquired by Unilever India in 2019, Horlicks continues to dominate the health drink market, offering vital nutrition for children and adults.
Horlicks was founded by James and William Horlicks two brothers from Gloucestershire. James who was a chemist worked for a company that made dried baby food. He had created a nutritious powder from barley malt, ground wheat, and milk easy to be mixed with water and would not spoil easily. James and William Horlick founded J & W Horlick in the year 1873 in Chicago (US). In 1945 the US Company was acquired, by the UK Horlicks business. It changed names and ownership many times and finally, GlaxoSmithKline's Indian Horlicks business was sold to Unilever India in the year 2019 for $3.8 billion.
Horlicks got popularized during World War II and was sold as candy and used by US, British and other soldiers for a boost. In 1948, Horlicks products were even given to the competitors at the London Olympics. Horlicks products were then marketed as a nutritional supplement and manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (Consumer Healthcare) in the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Jamaica. Horlicks remains popular in the UK, India, and Southeast Asia.
India is the brand's largest market, Horlicks products are considered a healthy food drink aimed at children, and Horlicks products comfortably dominate the health-drinks market in India. In 1960 first Horlicks factory in India was built in Punjab, to make Horlicks from buffalo milk. Because of cultural concerns in India, the milk powder is made from buffalo, rather than cow's milk.
The distribution of Horlicks products got stronger after its acquisition by Unilever in India. Its products are now even available in smaller cities and rural areas of India. Also, with the evolution of technology in India many grocery shopping websites have come up, where you can check Horlicks products prices online and add it to your purchase basket for delivery. One can also go to Horlick's website and order Horlicks online from its website as well.
