In 1885, Indian National Congress emergeed at Nehru family homes of Anand Bhavan and Swaraj Bhavan, both in Allahabad that were the centers of the political activities of the the part. The non-violence movement of Mahatma Gandhi started here in 1920.

Geographical location of Prayagraj is at 25.45°N 81.84°E in the southern region of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Bagelkhand region lies to its southeast, Purvanchal or the middle Ganges valley of North India is to its east, , Bundelkhand region is located to its southwest, Awadh region rests to its north and northeast and along with Kaushambi, it forms Doab region to its west. The districts sharing its boundaries are Pratapgarh in the north, Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh in the south, Sant Ravi Das Nagar in the east and Kaushambhi in the west. The geographical area of Prayagraj strides 5482 Sq. Km. Prayagraj counts 8 Tehsils, 20 Blocks of development and 2802 Villages.

As per the census report 2011, Prayagraj has a population of 1,112,544 in its 82 km2 area under Allahabad Municipal Corporation. But in January 2020, this boundary under Allahabad Municipal Corporation expanded to 365 km2. 2011 census report the sex ratio of Allahabad as 901 females per 1000 males. Hinduism is the religion of the majority with 76.03% followers, Islam has 21.94% following, Christianity counts 0.68% followers, Sikhism 0.28%, Jainism 0.10%, and Buddhism 0.28%. Whereas 0.02% follow some 'Other Religion' and about 0.90% follow 'No Particular Religion'. There has only one parliamentary constituency of Prayagraj but twelve Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are elected to the state legislative assembly.
